Council to receive a few new ideas towards Cow Bay Parking themes tonight

Cow Bay Parking could be conversation piece for
City Council members tonight

Parking in the Cow Bay Area will be back for a review tonight for City Council members, with a report from staff highlighting some new options towards creating parking opportunities in the popular tourist and retail sector of the community.

Among some areas for Council members to explore, an already approved plan to create new angled parking on First Avenue East with stairs to connect the First Avenue East area with Cow Bay, that initiative is anticipated to provide for 7 to 9 spots on the bluff area above Cow Bay.

As well the report notes that Staff has developed opportunities for 2 newly defined areas on the 3rd Avenue Extension and George Hills Way.

City Staff is currently reviewing these options for cost and the number of parking spots that it will increase.

Not included in the Report for Monday, is any follow up on the previous plans to remove parking spots from the current Cow Bay Road Parking Lot, or to build a new temporary lot further down George Hills Way past the Yacht Club area.

That plan which was outlined in June in relation to a planned property disposition, was part of an apparently evolving longer term plan to create more parking in the Cow Bay Area.

It ran into some opposition from many of the merchants and service providers in the Cow Bay Area in mid July.

The proposal for a temporary parking lot on George Hills Way
near the CBSA Compound is not mentioned in tonight's report

You can review the report for tonight from the City's Consent Agenda page here.

As with all items on the Consent Agenda, it may or may not come up for further discussion or review at the will of Council members, though considering the controversy of recent months, it may make for an item of interest for the public at the public comment period of tonight's session.

More notes related to tonight's Council Session can be reviewed from our Council Preview.

  1. Where are we finding the money for the new stairs in Cow Bay.
Fix the stairs round town and let taxpayers use existing before creating new stairs. There is nothing wrong with the people on parking on1st East walking around. The residents on 4th West are expected to walk around.
