North Coast Regional District members are looking to roll out the welcome mat in 2025, noting that they are preparing to join Prince Rupert and Port Edward officials in hosting delegates to the North Central Local Government Association in two years time.
Mayor Herb Pond announced the city's intention to play host to the annual convention at the July 24th Council session, and since then both Port Edward and now Regional District have also joined up to help make the experience and conference sessions a successful venture.
The plans for Regional District to share in the hosting duties came out of the Regional District Monthly session in August, a session which saw the Regional representatives tackle a range of items on the to do list.
Among them, making a resolution to request meetings at this Septembers UBCM convention, with Regional reps looking to meet with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and representatives of Northern Health.
Housing issues were also on the agenda for August, with Regional District officials now looking to support an application to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's Housing Accelerator Fund Program.
The Regional District Board also approved two Bylaw pieces, the First a Bylaw that will amend the process for the North Pacific Cannery Village Museum Grant in Aid program, the amendment noting that:
In accordance with Section 339 (1)(e) of the Local Government Act, the maximum amount that may be requisitioned annually for the cost of the service shall not exceed two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000).As well as NCRD approved Bylaw 683, 2023 the Mainland Arts and Culture Contribution bylaw.
Key to that initiative is:
North Coast Regional District moved to approve both following the end of the Alternate Approval Process that they had used to seek out comment from the public.
Regional District members will also be looking to host a meeting with DFO officials in the future, related to concerns over management of the area crab fishery.
The Board directed staff to reach out to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to invite a DFO delegation to a future meeting of the Board of the North Coast Regional District to discuss the invasive green crab issue and crab fisheries management.
