SD52 makes ready for September launch of 2023-24 School year

The staff and administrators for SD52 are in the final steps of preparation for the new school year, with the doors to school across the City, Port Edward and Hartley Bay set to open following the Labour Day weekend.

The School District offered up its welcome back to Students this week with a short notice on the SD52 website along with some details on the rollout of the Back to School program for this year.

Schools reopen to the students on September 5th, the first day a bit of a orientation project with classes to resume on September 6th.

Parents, Guardians and students can also check out the respective school websites for any information particular to the school they will be attending for the year ahead.

You can access those websites from this list from the SD52 website.

Back in May, the School District announced a number of organizational changes for the schools, you can review who's new to what position as students head back to school here.

As we outlined last week, SD52 is currently in the midst of a hiring blitz to fill a number of positions, with the School District offering a bonus of 5,000 dollars for prospective teachers.

The competition for teachers is a strong one however, further east, School District 91 in the Nechako Lakes region  is offering 10,000 dollar signing bonuses and covering moving expenses to fill their needs.

If the positions for Qualified Teachers cannot be filled, School Boards across the province can make use of Letters of Permission to allow for non certified teachers to work in classrooms.

After a very quiet summer of no correspondences for the public, the Prince Rupert School Board will resume its work in mid September, and one area that might need some clarification is the status of the line up for the elected trustees.

Trustee Michael Pucci recently took on new employment in Terrace and so far the School District has not noted if he has plans to remain on the board, which might seem unlikely considering his new station in his career path.

If he has resigned his post, that would leave an opening to fill, which may make for some of the first work for the rest of the elected officials next month.
