A whale watching excursion as close as the shoreline ... when the Whales allow for it

The last few months have had the town abuzz with some special marine visitors to the harbour.

As pods of whales (or maybe the same pod with return visits) come through the waters along the Prince Rupert shoreline, making the waterfront area the go to destination whenever the whales make for their presence.

For most of use, the chance to spot a whale only comes through a whale watching expedition, or if we're luck a crossing on a ferry.

But these last few weeks have seen them spotted from Seal Cove to the Rushbrook Trail and on along the shoreline to the Atlin Terminal and Rotary Waterfront park.

No need for a whale excursion this month,
For February the whales are coming to Prince Rupert

The alerts in recent weeks spread out by social media with each visitation, but those o us who dawdle are bound to be disappointed; the magnificent sea creatures pop in and out of the waters at their leisure and very much on their own schedule not ours.

Something seen in our video atop this piece ...

Still, those who have taken photos and videos so far have provided for a sense of the excitement that comes whenever the whales take their cruise through the area waterways.

For those of us who have missed out so far, the Metlaktatla First Nation has provided some amazing photos of the whales close up as they pass through their territorial waters.

They also note that with the whales has come some study of their travels, with A Department of Fisheries and Oceans research vessel in the area to follow up on some whale observations until next week.

For now the shore side watch party in Prince Rupert continues on the waterfront, a large crowd assembled on Thursday morning awaiting the next showing.
