Being Bear Aware took on a whole different meaning for residents of Lax Kw'alaams on Wednesday as the Band Council had to deal with a menacing bear roaming the community.

An alert was issued to residents on Wednesday morning advising to the need for caution in the community with the sighting of a Grizzly Bear in the town site, a situation which had escalated by afternoon to the point where the decision to put the bear down was made as the bear had become a threat to community residents.

That decision has sparked somewhat of an online debate about what could have been the best course of action, though with only a pair of conservation officers in the Northwest available for such calls and the urgency of the recent interaction, the move appears to have made with the public interest foremost in mind.

The remains of the grizzly will be used by community members.

The Band Council has continued to ask residents of the community to remain vigilant as there have been other bear sightings relayed to them.
