Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue responds to incident at Civic Centre, with reports of an ammonia leak at Arena

The City of Prince Rupert has posted an advisory on its Facebook page and mobile application advising that the Civic Centre facility has been closed after Prince Rupert Fire Rescue responded to a report of an Ammonia leak at the municipal arena.

The incident was reported after 4:30, with the majority of the users for the day having already left the facility,  a number of summer camps are taking place at the facility this week.

Alarm bells alerted patrons and staff to the situation and the Recreation Centre has now been fully evacuated and will remain closed until further notice.

Further updates will be provided by the City as details become available.





Update: The city has further advised that two people were taken to hospital in relation to today's incident and are receiving treatment at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital.

According to reports, a container full of ammonia exploded making the evacuation of the complex necessary   The pair that were taken to hospital, were  two golfers who had  come over to the Arena to offer assistance.

Second Update: The City has advised that the two people hospitalized have been released. as well the Fire Department has given the all clear for the facility, with all programs to resume on Thursday.
