The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service recently issued its annual reminder of the end of the slumber cycle for the province's bears, with a bit of advice for residents of the province towards being more Bear Aware.

Those are themes of note in Lax Kw'alaams this week, following the first Bear sightings of the Spring from the community north of Prince Rupert.

In an advisory for residents it was noted that both Grizzly and Black Bears had been spotted, with the Band Council providing some advice for residents to follow to avoid Bear Encounters or what to do if you find yourself in the vicinity of one.

The BC Conservation Officer Service provided a video and some additional information on Bear Aware themes for consideration of residents as well.

Key towards the topic is to ensure that you do not provided any attractants for Bears to make a house call in your location, you can review those themes here.

Should you have an encounter with a Bear or other wildlife concerns Contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) if a bear poses an immediate threat or danger to public safety.

The Conservation Officer Service also hosts a video on their website on how to stay safe in Bear Country.

More notes on the work of the. BC Conservation Officer Service can be reviewed through our Northwest Emergency Responders archive.
