More support towards City of Prince Rupert's quest for Federal assistance on water infrastructure issues

City Council members will hear word of two more letters of support towards their hopes to secure Federal assistance to address water infrastructure concerns that became prominent on their agenda during the recent Christmas Holiday period.

The city's water woes led to the declaration of a Local State of Emergency, and what has become a steady flow of letters of support towards the City's call on the Federal government for financial assistance towards rebuilding the water infrastructure.

Tonight Council members will share word that  the communities of Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla have added their weight to the cause, with a pair of letters that have been forwarded to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for review by Council.

As we've outlined previous, the letter writing campaign of support began with North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice who forwarded her correspondence to the Federal Government on December 22nd.

The MLA's letter was followed by one signed by a trio of BC Government Minister's who called for a partnership with the province and city towards the issues noting that they should be a priority consideration.

Last month we noted that the Prince Rupert Port Authority provided its support for the call for assistance, forwarding their letter to the Federal Government during the State of Local Emergency.

The City brought an end to the Local State of Emergency just before Christmas Day and since that time has not made any statements or public comments or updates related to the current status of the water infrastructure and ongoing repairs.

The Council membership has not spoken in public session towards the list of correspondences of support, nor whether they have heard from anyone from the Federal Government towards their request for assistance.

Some background on the city's infrastructure issues can be reviewed from our archive page.

More notes on tonight's Council Session can be examined from our Preview.

  1. Too bad that it took a local state of emergency to get this... but its very encouraging to see the MLA, MP, PRPA, Lax Kwalaams and Metlakatla all singing the same tune as the City to the feds on this file. Lets keep it up!
