Haida Gwaii / Central Coast two of eighteen areas of land acquisition for provincial park or protected area status

North Coast residents will have to catch a ferry if they wish to see some of the latest areas marked for park development by the Provincial Government.

Earlier this week, the BC Government announced that had recently concluded land acquisitions for sixteen parcels of land across the province, all of them now set to be included in the provincial parks system.

As part of their 2019-2020 program the province also made land purchases towards two protected areas.

Among the eighteen was a land acquisition of 123 hectares on Haida Gwaii at Naikoon Park and 24.5 hectares at Tweedsmuir Park at Bella Coola.

The Haida Gwaii park is located on the Northeast coastal area of the Island, east of Masset.

“Our parks and protected areas are among the natural treasures of our province and play an important role in our overall health and well-being, especially during COVID-19. These areas also provide critical habitat to a number of species. Acquiring additional land means more species and ecosystems will be protected and the land will be here for generations to come.” -- George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

The total value of the land purchases comes to more than 9.7 million dollars. The two areas of note for the Central Coast and Haida Gwaii claimed almost one million dollars of that amount.

The province notes that when it acquires land there are a number of steps that follow before it becomes a park or protected area. Among those steps, engagement with Indigenous nations, consultation with local government, as well as to define legal boundary and legal designation.

The two park locations of note for the Central Coast and Haida Gwaii can be explored below:

More details on the provincial land acquisition can be reviewed from the statement from earlier this week.

A full review of each of the areas selected by the province for the program can be found as part of the 2019-2020 Report released with this weeks announcement.
