The Metlakatla First Nation is hoping that its members take some time to share a few thoughts on the topic of food security, with members of the community being asked to take part in the Metlakatla Food Assessment Survey.
The focus for the survey is described as follows:
Sag̱ayt k'üülm g̱aył is a multifaceted project seeking to address food security issues amongst the Metlakatla people. Food security is a huge issue in Canada with increasing concerns surrounding the high cost of food in isolated communities, the recent rise in food prices globally, and concerns about the safety and sustainability of the food supply.
By addressing this issue at a community level, we are hoping to decolonise our food spaces and reconnect to our eating culture. In taking ownership of our food, we want to support the sense of autonomy and pride inherent to the Ts'msyen peoples as we combine traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with science; and put in place a project that allows our communities to become more self-sufficient and sustainable with food production, sharing and consumption.
The Metlakatla First Nation is offering the chance to win $500 for those members who participate in the survey
