Blog Watching: Week ending June 9, 2019

For many on the North Coast, the name Nasoga Gulf was a somewhat unfamiliar topic, having been off the discussion table for a number of years in the region, up until this week that is.

As the week came to an end however, Nasoga Gulf had come to dominate much of the news, making some headlines not only on the North Coast but down south as well, with readers of the blog propelling all of our articles of the week to high levels of readership.

Also finding large audiences this week was a review of some news out of Greater Vancouver that may offer some hope for Prince Rupert City Council on the theme of revenue generation from the Port of Prince Rupert.

Our notes on a pair of letters from SD52 to the provincial government also gained a good audience, that as the School District looks for a bit of guidance on funding issues and a chance to show the Education Minister the state of Prince Rupert Middle School and seek out a replacement for the aging facility.

Municipal politics also generated some news this week, with former Mayor Jack Mussallem taking to the editorial pages of the weekly paper with some thoughts on provincial funding for municipalities.

And as Canadians observed the 75th Anniversary of D Day, we were gratified to see a good number of readers explore our tribute to the Greatest generation and their sacrifice for us.

However it was the now percolating dispute for Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla, with the Nisga'a Lisims Government and Provincial government over a proposed land transaction at Nasoga Gulf that became among our most viewed items of the week.

Nasoga Gulf question, Economic Development and Reconciliation among the themes for Community Information  sessions ahead for Lax Kw'alaams Members  -- Our early week notes on a community meeting for Lax Kw'alaams provided the preamble to a flurry of news stories by Friday, as the Nasoga Gulf Controversy broke into public domain with the opposing views aired out in statements and information blockades.  You can review the busy week of news items that were culled from the week's events here.   (posted June 4, 2019)

That article was followed by:

Provincial Port Tax Process said to be set for review by Ministry of Finance -- It's a topic that has been on the front burner for Prince Rupert City Council for almost a decade, and finally it seems the Province is listening when it comes to port related revenue concerns. While the current Mayor and Council members have not yet made mention of some progress, the word out of North Vancouver is that the province will soon announce a review of the issue by the Ministry of Finance   (posted June 3, 2019)

SD52 Board Chair in a letter writing mood; with two correspondences for the Ministry of Education --    SD52 Chair James Horne sat down to the word processor last month to fire off two letters to the province's Ministry of Education. One to seek further guidance on the province's plans for a funding review; the other a call for Minister Rob Fleming to come to Prince Rupert to explore what the District is doing and to see first hand the state of the Prince Rupert Middle School and the desires of SD52 for its replacement.  (posted  June 5, 2019)

Former Mayor Jack, has Jennifer's back! Especially when it comes to provincial funding for City Council -- For much of the last four years former Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem has kept a fairly low profile on municipal issues. However, with the city recently announcing a tax rate reduction and extensive paving plan, the former Mayor decided that the time was right to share a few thoughts.  Delivered by way of a editorial contribution to the weekly paper, Mr. Mussallem directed his tribute for the good news, to the work of MLA Rice  (posted  June 7, 2019)

On the Beaches of Normandy, June 6th would forever be remembered for sacrifice and duty -- This past Thursday marked another important milestone of remembrance of the Second World War, and a heartening volume of readers took some time to take in our tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day    (posted  June 6, 2019)
