Seafest Saturday when Second Avenue becomes a five block party



If there is one day of the three days of Seafest that keeps organizers of the Special Events Society hopping it's Seafest Saturday, which makes for over twelve hours of activities for festival goers to take in as part of the Seafest experience.

The day starts early with a Pancake Breakfast at Naomi's Grill from 8 to 11 AM, the downtown eatery offering up the pancakes, sausage and bacon for 7 dollars for adults, 3 dollars for children.

The Seafest Parade which is one of the signature events of the three days takes to the streets at 11 AM, celebrating it's 40th anniversary, the theme this year is The Way It Was. 

The parade sees participation from local groups and organizations, as well as out of town visitors, the parade works its way down Second Avenue West, before working its way back down Third Avenue West with a turn at 7th Street.

A seven block stretch of the Downtown core serves as the focal point
for Seafest Saturday, with the Parade set for an 11 AM start from the
Court House down 2nd Avenue with a return back up 3rd Ave West.

The Downtown events make for the Street party along much of Third and in other areas of the downtown core following the parade shortly after the noon hour, with a number of exhibits and stations for Seafest goers to explore.

For those looking to be pointed in the right direction the Seafest Info Booth by the City Hall Fountain will be your first destination, you can also pick up your Happy Pirates of Pacific souvenirs and treats from that central location.

Among some of the activities take in through Seafest Saturday:

The Living Statue, found at Third Avenue West at City Hall from 10:30 AM to 4 PM

Who's that Hump back? Hosted by the North Coast Cetacean Research Initiative and taking place at the DFO Parking lot from 11 AM to 3 PM

The Canadian Coast Guard host a display, also at the DFO parking lot where you can learn about their work from 11 AM to 4:30 PM

The Wheelhouse Brewing Charity Beer Gardens open their doors at Noon and will host guests through until 8 PM, with music through the event in aid of the Prince Rupert Firefighters Burn Fund. the Beer Gardens are a 19+ event.

Dr. Von Houligan's Carnival of Calamities, brought to town thanks to the Lions Club, the Free show for all takes place at the corner McBride and Third Avenue West from 1 to 2:30. The Carnival has two more performances on Saturday from 3:30 to 5 PM  and again from 7 to 8:30.

Pictures with a Pirate Ship, The Port Authority hosts the photo opportunity from a booth at Third Avenue West and Third Street, the ship offers a two hour window for photos from 1 to 3 PM. Remember to smile, you could win a tour of the harbour for five people.

Fast and Furious Art Attack, Some of Prince Rupert's top artists and those taking to the easel perhaps for the first time will gather behind City Hall for the showcase painting battle from 1 to 3 PM.

The Dunk Tank, for twenty years Seafest goers have been warming up their pitching arms to dunk a list of local luminaries into the giant tank at the DFO parking lot, you can make your best pitch by donation from 1 to 3 PM. At the same time take advantage of the opportunity to explore the critter tank.

Pie Throwing booth, hosted by the Early Childhood Educators of BC you can once again warm up your tossing arm at 2 dollars toss the pies fly from 1 to 4 PM.

SPCA Face Painting, Get in the Seafest spirit with some personal artwork, by donation towards the trap, spay and neuter program. The booth is open from 1 to 4 PM

Special Olympics of BC host a booth from 1 to 4 PM that will feature basketball scrimmages and a chance to learn more about the local program in Prince Rupert. The organization will also be holding an Open House at Prince Rupert Middle School on Sunday from 10 AM to 2:30 PM

Soap Box Derby the competition is friendly as the cars roll down Third Avenue West from the starting line at 2nd Street, hosted by the Prince Rupert Fellowship Baptist Church the races take place from 1 to 4:30 PM

Cardboard Boat Regatta, Prince Rupert's future shipbuilders put their cardboard creations together in the City Hall Parking lot from 1 to 4:30 PM, with teams of four making their craft ready for Sunday's launch at Rotary Waterfront park. The Regatta is hosted by the Navy League and Captain Cook Sea Cadets.

Prince Rupert's Punjabi Bhangra Group will be providing for Mehndi Henna hand art from a booth at 3rd Avenue and Third Street from 1 PM to 4:30 PM, you can have your hand art done by donation with proceeds to go towards the CHSS student India trip.

Take in some labour history courtesy of the Teamsters who will be sharing the story of labour in British Columbia from 1 to 5 PM with the display available from their trailer at 3rd Avenue and 2nd Street.

The City Hall Bandstand will feature music and entertainment through the afternoon until 5 PM, a number of community and school bands are on the playbill for the day.

The Jim Ciccone Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament continues for its second day, with the 500 block of Third Avenue Host as the home court from 1 to 5 PM

Seek our some Zen and find your bliss with Zikhara Yoga as they celebrate their 5th anniversary with a Free drop in session at the studio at 200 1st Avenue East near Mariner's park. The event takes place from 1 to 4 PM

The Beat DJ -- 3rd Avenue West and 5th Street has the beat as Julius Watts lays down the sound of Seafest from 2 to 5 PM

The Best of the city's arm wrestlers will test their skills at the Belmont, as the 41st annual Arm Wrestling Challenge takes place from 2 to 5 PM.

Theatre takes Centre stage from 7 to 9 PM at the Lester Centre, as CHSS presents Dessert Theatre, with one act student Dramas Fighting Demons, This is a test and Dear Evan Hansen are on the show bill,  the evening also features Desert sampling and a silent auction, Admission is 10 dollars at the door.

Dixie Dead Shake at Wheelhouse Brewing, the music carries on into the evening as the popular Prince Rupert band shake things up from 9 PM to 1 AM, the night out is a 19 year plus event.
