Day of the Seafarer offers opportunity to think of the world's mariners who arrive in Prince Rupert daily
As home to one of Canada's busiest ports, Prince Rupert finds itself among a unique club of cities as destinations and a place of rest for those who travel the seas for a living and today is their day, with June 25th the annual celebration of the Day of the Seafarer.
The day an opportunity to give thanks to the diverse international collection of ships crews that arrive at our port facilities and explore the city while they await their departure to the next city on their manifesto of transit.
The roster of the Port of Prince Rupert Daily vessel report one part shipping register, one part world atlas.
Whether its the containers ships of Fairview, the commodities vessels of Ridley Island and those loading off shore near the Industrial park or the Cruise ship currently docked at the Northland Terminal, all host a crew and officers from all corners of the world, who find themselves in Prince Rupert today.
Locally the Seafarers storefront at 245 Third Avenue helps to make those visitors welcome and today will be a day like many others, as mariners from the world drop in to take advantage of some of the services that are offered by the local volunteers who keep the local facility open.
Today the local Seafarers Mission, assisted by the Port of Prince Rupert is hosting a celebration for the visitors to the city, learn more about their work locally here.
If you're in the downtown area today, drop in to see if you can help with their ongoing work to make Prince Rupert a welcoming port of call for the near invisible workforce in the city that you may not think of much. But one that is an integral part of Prince Rupert's growing presence in the world of shipping.
Twitter is making for a good starting point to join in on the global celebration, you can follow the day's tributes to the Seafarers here.
