The newly elected government of Premier John Horgan will take to their duties today as the British Columbia Legislature resumes operations with a short two week pre Christmas session, with the majority of the focus to be the delivery the ability to deliver on some of the financial measures outlined in recent months towards COVID relief efforts.
Among the measures that will be of note for British Columbians, the NDP's campaign promise of a one time, tax-free payment of 1,000 dollars for eligible families and $500 dollars for qualifying individuals.
Though whether the timeline will allow for deliver prior to Christmas Day is something that will be hopefully explained as the government returns with the Speech from the Throne at 10AM this morning
The NDP take office following their strong results of the 2020 election campaign, one that few seemed to want, but one which delivered an impressive majority for the Premier who now has 56 MLA's on his side of the legislature, while the opposition Liberals were reduced to 28 members, with the Greens caucus now at 2 member.
It's anticipated that the 2020-21 session will continue on with the hybrid approach that has been made necessary by COVID, with many of the MLA's participating remotely by video.
The short session whould have most of its work completed by the 17th of December.
