With the role of the supply chain becoming a daily news item of late, the Prince Rupert Port Authority has taken advantage of that spotlight to provide for an update on some of their larger infrastructure projects underway along the footprint of Port Operations in Prince Rupert.

In an item posted to the PRPA website today, the Port provides a snapshot of the state of progress towards four of their high profile initiatives, included on the list the expansion work on the Fairview Container Terminal and the construction of the Fairview-Ridley Connector Corridor.

As well, the planning that is in motion towards two logistics facilities, one destined for Ridley Island, the other the joint venture with the Metlakatla Development Corporation.

Towards the expansion of the DP World Fairview facility, the Port's update notes:

The first stage of the expansion is now 50 per cent complete and will be finished in July 2022, increasing capacity at the Fairview Container Terminal to 1.6 million TEUs, making it the second-largest container terminal in the country. The second stage of the expansion is set to be completed in late 2024 and will see the terminal’s capacity grow to 1.8 million TEUs.

Some other items of interest related to the Fairview Expansion work include:

The container yard will expand from 32 to 41 hectares and two new rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes and an eighth dock gantry crane, which has already been added (2021).

The existing maintenance and administration buildings will be relocated to create additional container storage capacity.

The truck gate will be expanded and relocated to the south end of the terminal, where it will connect with the new Fairview-Ridley Connector Corridor.

On-dock rail capacity will be expanded by 6,680 feet, for a total of 24,680 feet of on-dock rail by 2022.

The much anticipated, and somewhat delayed,  Fairview-Ridley Connector road also appears to be in the home stretch with a completion date anticipated sometime before July, the Port observing on that project with the following:

The new Fairview-Ridley Connector Corridor is on track to be completed in Q2 of 2022 When complete later this spring, the Fairview-Ridley Connector Corridor will reroute container trucks from local transload and customs facilities directly to Fairview Container Terminal.

The longer range planning for the expansion of Logistical options focuses first on the work underway for the Port, DP World and Ray-Mont Logistics for a facility on Ridley Island.

To address this need, DP World, Ray-Mont Logistics, and the Prince Rupert Port Authority are in the advanced stages of developing a world-class logistics facility on Ridley Island for exports. The rail-serviced logistics centre will offer a unique combination of scale, speed and terminal integration that will become the new standard for export transload services on the west coast.

The Joint initiative with Metlakatla Development also makes for a brief update as to how it will help grow the Gateway into the future.

The Metlakatla Development Corporation and the Prince Rupert Port Authority are also developing an import logistics facility on 34 acres near the Fairview Container Terminal. The South Kaien Import Logistics Facility, which will be integrated into the Prince Rupert Gateway’s innovative logistics hub, is a critical component of the Port Authority’s plan for even further growth by 2030 and another example of the value of collaboration for the economic prosperity for the entire region.
