Haida Gwaii's Naikoon Park to increase with expansion of protection area

A remarkable place will see additional protection following
Thursday's announcement from the BC Government 



Visitors to one of the top attractions on Haida Gwaii will have more area to explore in the near future as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announces an increase in the protected area of Naikoon Park

The details to the plan coming by way of an announcement on Thursday putting in place protections for 123 hectares of wetlands and sand dunes.

“People’s desire to interact with nature has never been greater. Parks provide the opportunity to connect with nature and strengthen our physical and mental well-being. We continue to look for opportunities to add ecologically and culturally significant lands to our diverse parks system, and expand opportunities for outdoor recreation.” -- George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. 

The Haida Gwaii park area was the only one in the Northwest of the seven areas identified Thursday, for status as a protected area in British Columbia, you can review the full announcement from the BC government here.




North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice who represents Haida Gwaii hailed the announcement through her social media stream on Thursday.
