Prince Rupert Paramedic seeks better intersection marking and crosswalk safety

BC Ambulance Member Jennifer Friesen has outlined a few
concerns and offered city council safe community safety advice
in a letter to Council

Prince Rupert City Council is going to read and hear a bit about community safety tonight, that as they receive a correspondence from Jessica Friesen, a local member of the BC Ambulance Service, who has a pair of concerns to raise with Council.

In a correspondence available through the City Council Agenda for tonight, Ms. Friesen is asking the city to address the issue of missing street name markers noting of 63 intersections and a number of four way stops where any kind of identification marker is in place.

As par of her commentary for Council to consider, she offers up a solution asking that all intersections  and streets be labelled and have corresponding address identification. 

Adding that having the street signs identify which addresses are on the that street would significantly decrease our response time and increase clarity as multiple streets are segmented into sections.

Included in her documentation for Council's review are a number of maps and descriptions of concerns for areas of the city.

Crosswalk safety is the second item that she raises for Council in her letter, noting of the particular hazards for pedestrians found on 2nd and 3rd Avenue West, asking for the City to consider pedestrian activated lights to address the situation, suggesting a starting point to be at Third and Fourth Streets.

Council may have some ability for those options on Third Avenue West, but as Second Avenue is a provincial highway, the best that they may be able to do is to urge the Ministry of Transportation to take heed of her request.

It's not the first time that the BC Ambulance Service member has made a presentation to City Council last fall she teamed up with the Local RCMP to ask for larger home identification markers in the community.
