A Snow eating wind does blow, set to bring rain this evening and into Friday

The late morning and afternoon period has been an impressive display of Mother Nature's lung power, with some fast moving clouds arriving in the morning brought in by some strong winds that have persisted through the day.

According to the Windy App, which charts weather systems, at times the Gusts were as high as 50 knots over the harbour and across the city.

For us non mariners that's close to 90 km/hr or near 60 miles per hour

A speed that wasn't too far off the pace of the open sea of Hecate Strait where a Storm Warning has been in place for much of the mid morning and afternoon.

Those winds account for the wave after wave of whitecaps in the harbour that made for some impressive viewing from high locations around the city. The winds and the warmth that has come with them is also providing a public service of sorts, chewing through some of the accumulated snow and shaking snow from trees and rooftops around town.

There has been a downside though, some awnings in the downtown area have been impacted by the winds and more than a few trees looking like it may take only one more good burst to bring them to the ground,.

As well, there have been sporadic power bumps through the afternoon.

Such was the risk of the winds, that the city closed the Landfill site to the public at 1PM

The Weather system knocking at the door, is set to bring rain tonight and tomorrow, as well as into Friday. Something that should take away more of our accumulated snow, but will also make for pooling water and slushy conditions, particularly in areas where catch basins have yet to be cleared.

The winds will also continue into the evening, though not quite as powerful as that which the afternoon delivered around the city.
