Elected Metlakatla First Nation officials take their oath and their office

The New Metlakatla Council membership following their
oath of office on Thursday

The change from one Council to another in Metlakatla has moved forward quickly.

Fresh from the results of last Friday's Metlakatla First Nation election, the new Chief Councillor and Council members took their oaths of office on Thursday.

The ceremony took place yesterday at a morning event in the First Nation community across the harbour from Prince Rupert.

At the ceremony, the elected Chief Councillor Robert Nelson and council members Alvin Leask, Erika Leighton, Sharon Morven, Alrita Leask, Miranda Leighton and Charlene McLean all took their oaths and prepared to get down to the work ahead for their community.

The Metlaktla First Nation provided a short video of the ceremony through their social media stream.

The make up of the Metlakatla council resembles that of Prince Rupert not too many years ago, that one with a strong contingent of female Council members elected to office from the September 30th results.

429 members of the First Nation cast ballots in the September election, you can review the final tally of the votes here.

As part of yesterday's celebration, Metlaktla had provided for an additional sailing of the community ferry for those wishing to attend in person.

More notes on what's ahead can be found through the Metlakatla Social Media stream
