Rampage take season opener in high scoring, physical contest at the Jim

The members of the Prince Rupert Rampage and Hazelton Wolverines dug into the ice for their CIHL regular season  debut Saturday night and if lots of scoring and lots of physical play is your kind of hockey ... they brought both to the rink in the season ice breaker.

The night would be one to remember for the 1,150 in attendance at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre, with the home side taking the contest by a score of 6-4.

Saturday night's home opener took place on National Truth and Reconciliation Day and the Rampage observed the day with a special pre game ceremony that delivered on the message of solidarity ad observance for the day.

The Rampage President Brett Stava shared a photo of the opening event through the Rampage social media stream, the impressive sight one that has gained the team some praise for their observance.

The opening event one that was picked up by the CIHL Facebook page.

Following the opening ceremony of remembrance, the two teams took to the ice for a hard fought battle, with the tension on the ice building up through the first two periods,  with the final frame one where both benches became lighter on the night as misconducts ruled the final 20 minutes.

On the scoreboard the first goal of the season went to Tyler Ostrom, assisted by Hunter Johnson and Tyler Halliday at the 12:05 mark of period one.  An opening marker answered two minutes later by the Wolverines on the power play.

The Rampage would go into the intermission with their own power play goal at 18:14 when Kory Movold found the range assisted by Judd Repole.

The Second period brought a strong offensive push from the homeside, with Judd Repole picking up a power play marker at 2:55 assisted by Tyler Ostrom.

A few minutes later Jared Meers was on the scoreboard his marker assisted by Movold coming at 5:14

Hazelton would get one back midway through the second frame, but the Rampage added to their total at 17:43 with Tyler Halliday picking up a power play goal assisted by Judd Repole and Marcus Atchison

That put the Rampage into a 5-2 lead heading into the third.

The roughing, tripping and hooking of the previous two periods accelerated into outright hostilities by the third, which saw a parade of penalties and misconducts handed out as emotions boiled over.

The parade of penalties made for numerous power play opportunities, the Wolverines taking advantage of one at 2:21, a goal answered two minutes later by Kory Movold, assisted by Jared Meers.

The final goal of the night came at 13:45 with one final marker for Hazelton, the 6-4 score holding through the final few minutes to the final buzzer.

Shots on goal were relatively close with the Rampage recording 32, the Wolverines directing 24 on the net of Kieran Sharpe who recorded his first win between the pipes for 2023-24.

The final period of hostility propelled the total penalties to the upper reaches, with the Wolverines assessed 48 minutes of penalty time on 13 infractions, the Rampage clearly not inclined to be run out of their own building, had penalty time of 67 minutes on 17 infractions.
