Affordable Housing and community poverty themes a likely topic for tonight's Committee of the Whole session

Renovictions and affordable
housing remain current themes
of concern for Prince Rupert renters
While it's not outlined in detail on the Agenda, there's a pretty good chance that Prince Rupert's Council members are going to hear a bit about housing tonight, with the current crisis situation in affordable housing the likely theme.

That as the Agenda for tonight's Committee of the Whole portion of the final public meeting for April makes note of a presentation from Paul Legace.

Mr. Legace who is Coordinator and Poverty Law Advocate at the Prince Rupert Unemployed.Action Centre on Third Avenue West  has frequently spoken out for those forced from their homes by renoviction, or unable to find affordable accommodation  in the community.

He has addressed the ongoing  renoviction  situation a number of times in recent months, most recently having provided assistance to those who were being moved out of their homes on the east side of the city last year

More currently,  he has been speaking out in support of the proposed Lax Kw'alaams Housing plans for 11th Avenue East and also has commented on the current recruitment campaign Make Prince Rupert Home,  that the City has partnered in on, highlighting how the need for affordable housing should continue to be a focus.

The Committee of the Whole session will be the opening act for tonights Regular Council session, the Zoom presentation which is available online through the City's website and on CityWest Cable 10 will start at 7PM.

  1. I hope someone will bring up the number of rental properties that BC Housing control over and sit idle and empty. There does not seem to be a maintenance program. With the housing shortage these properties should be rented.

  2. Would appreciate if Mr. Legace took time tonight to quantify;

    - actual renovictions in Prince Rupert in the last 12 months
    - Current Prince Rupert unemployment and vacancy rates

    I would also like to hear from Mr. Legace on;

    - What his definition of affordable is
    - Why does he support housing that involves greenspace reduction. But does not condemn the choice to use a suitable building lot downtown for growing vegetables instead of housing?
