The return of the Rotary Club of Prince Rupert's New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim brought out a large group of enthusiasts some taking to the water for a quick plunge and retreat, some of the heartier souls lingering in the somewhat cool temperatures of the Rushbrook Floats Area.

Those watching from the side and above on the big dock,  outnumbered the participants by a healthy measure, but that didn't keep a good number of those on the boat ramp or the side dock at Rushbrook from taking a leap and a dip.

The weather on Sunday as near to perfect as you might expect for an event to herald the start of January and a brand new year.

Rotarians were standing by to welcome the Polar Dippers back to the shore with hot dogs and hot chocolate, with Tim Horton's and Save On Foods helping with the supplies.

The popular event was co-hosted by the Port Edward Harbour Authority which operates Rushbrook Floats.

Also, on hand to lend assistance if required were both the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Marine SAR Station 64, as well as local Emergency Responders.

This was the first opportunity for a large crowd to take part in the once annual event, which had been interrupted through our recent years of COVID.

Prince Rupert Rotary has a number of photos to go along with their video presentation of the New Year's Day event, you can access those items here.
