MLA's Week: May 8-11, 2023



The last week of the Spring Session was a light one for participation of the members of the Northwest, once again mostly made up of introductions of guests in the gallery or back at the home constituency.

Of the three Northwest MLA's the only notations in the Hansard pages for the week are for North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice, with three mentions for her time in the Chamber. 

For the Northwest and more specifically for Haida Gwaii, this week was a symbolic moment at the legislature with the Members providing third reading of the Haida Nation Act.


The Province also alerted British Columbians to the test this week of the Emergency Alert System


As for more on the recent week of work from the House, the four days unfolded as follows:

On the week, Ms Rice was mentioned three toes for the week in the  Legislature from May 8-11, 2023.

On Monday afternoon, Ms. Rice used the Introduction period of the day to bring attention of the Legislature to an incident at a Prince Rupert school, sending her solidarity and that of many of her colleagues to a student at the centre of the concerning SD52 classroom situation.


Tuesday morning, the North Coast MLA took note of the special occasion to take place later in the morning with a presentation from the delegation of the Haida Nation, Ms. Rice offering her own welcome to the delegation at the10:19 mark of the morning session.

Ms. Rice also noted of her ten year anniversary as an MLA, that as part of her welcome to the Haida delegation on Tuesday


The final commentary for the Spring session from Ms. Rice came as part of the Wednesday afternoon session, when she offered up 101st birthday greetings to Edith Thorpe who was visiting  the Leg in the gallery. (See 13:58 mark of the session)

Ms. Rice was active on her Social media stream, noting of some of the government initiatives of the week

The North Coast MLA is also a member of the Following committees:





The MLA Is also Deputy Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts 

Ms. Rice serves as the Government's Parliamentary Secretary for Rural health.

The North Coast MLA also addressed a range of themes and relayed  a number of government announcements through her Social Media Stream.

For our readers from the Terrace-Kitimat region, Skeena MLA Ellis Ross  was not  mentioned once in the record for the week in the Legislature from May 8-11 2023.


Mr. Ross serves as the Liberal critic on LNG and Energy

The Skeena MLA has not been named to any of the Standing Committees for this session.

The Skeena MLA also addressed a range of themes  featured as part of the MLA's social media work.

For our readers from the Bulkley Valley area, Stikine MLA Nathan Cullen  was not mentioned once  in the record for the week in the  Legislature from May 8-11, 2023.


Mr. Cullen serves as the Government's Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship.

The Stikine MLA also had comments on a range of themes through his Social Media stream this week

Barring any emergency debates, or legislative requirements over the summer, the MLA's are not scheduled to return to the Chamber until September and the start of the Fall session.
