Walk of remembrance of the Missing planned Friday evening in Prince Rupert

Friday evening will bring an opportunity for the community to share solidarity with the families of Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit people with local community organizers hosing a community walk from the Court House to the Nisga'a Hall on Third Avenue West.

The event has a 6PM start time with participants asked to wear red in support.

The evening event will feature song, as well as remembrances from family members of those who have gone missing

In a social media post on Wednesday, The City of Prince Rupert has advised that Third Avenue will be closed to traffic for the event, as well as to outline some of the background to the event and the awareness that organizers are seeking to share with the community.

One of the events organizers Chantal Meggison noted last month of the number of those in the community that have stepped up to lend a hand towards Friday's event.

On Wednesday Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach and Winnipeg area MP Leah Hazan co hosted an event in Ottawa in support of a program called the Red Dress Alert System

That is an initiative that proposes the creation of an alert system by cel phone to alert the public when Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ people are reported missing.

Details of how that would roll out and the MP's ongoing efforts to make it a reality can be reviewed below:
