Blog Watching: Week ending June 4, 2023

Access to the region's wilderness dominated our list of five most read items this week, with the Metlakatla First Nation announcing the reopening of the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail after a near 8 year closure.

As part of their relaunch for the trail, Metlakatla has also offered an opportunity for those wishing to access the trail some free transportation twice a week later this month.

Education in Prince Rupert gained some significant interest from readers on two occasion this week, the first coming from the adoption of their Budget Bylaw by SD52 trustees, while our preview of an information session on a new student performance  reporting program for 2023-24 also gained a large audience.

There was some tragic news from Vanderhoof this week, with the BC RCMP Major Crimes Unit confirming that their investigation had discovered the remains of missing Vanderhoof resident Madison Scott. The then 20 year old woman went missing twelve years ago, the investigation continues into her death and Mounties continue to call on the public for any assistance they may have towards the investigation.

And while the new RCMP detachment rises along Third Avenue East at McBride, the City of Prince Rupert has announced a competition towards some artwork for the new facility.

With Wilderness Trail now reopened  ...Metlakatla offers an invitation to explore and some transportation to get there --   The Metlakatla First Nation celebrated the reopening of the Metlakatla Wilderness Trails, closed close to eight years for repairs. With the reopening Metlakatla has also outlined an opportunity for visitors to explore the once popular space, offering free transportation twice a week later this month. Judging by the popularity of our story, they may see some strong participation this summer.  (posted May 31, 2023

BC Major Crime Unit delivers update on discovery of Madison Scott's remains east of Vanderhoof --  A 12 year mystery related to the disappearance of a young Vanderhoof woman came to at tragic discovery this week, with the BC RCMP Major Crimes Unit and Vanderhoof RCMP advising the public of the discovery of the remains of Madison Scott. Her case file had become a significant image for communities along the Highway 16 corridor, the province and nationally. The investigation now continues into  the circumstances of her death.   (posted May 29, 2023

City of Prince Rupert announces call for Artists for design work on new RCMP detachment -- The foundation and walls may still be a work in progress. But when it comes to what the final look of the new RCMP detachment will look like the City of Prince Rupert has issue a call for artists to offer up some concepts for artwork for the detachment for  consideration.     (posted May 30, 2023
