Skeena-Bukley Valley MP advocates for Tax Deduction for Haida Gwaii

A program that provides for some cost reductions for residents of Northern regions of Canada is being proposed for use on Haida Gwaii, with Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach calling for the islands to be included as part of the Northern Resident Tax Deduction program.

The MP spoke to the high cost of living on Haida Gwaii yesterday, noting of the cost of living in Dajiing Giids as part of his call for the program to be expanded.

"The living wage reflects what people need to earn to afford the basic necessities of life. In the Village of Dajiing Giids on Haida Gwaii, working parents have to each earn 26.25 per house to afford those necessities that's the second highest of any BC Community

The Northern Residents Tax Deduction was designed to help residents of remote communities with affordability.

For over a decade Haida Gwaii residents have been asking this Federal Government to provide them with the full deduction"

More on what the program is all about can be reviewed here.

The list of applicable zones in BC is available for review here.

While his advocacy on Thursday was for residents on Haida Gwai, at least one constituent is looking for the program to roll out for Prince Rupert as well.

More notes from the House of Commons can be reviewed here.
