Oil Tanker Moratorium on North Coast survives Conservative challenge at House of Commons

Oil Tanker Moratorium to remain in place
following defeat of Conservative member's bill 
in the  House of Commons

By a cushion of ninety votes, a motion from a Conservative member of the House of Commons to have the Oil Tanker Moratorium on the North Coast overturned went down to defeat, the vote Wednesday ensuring that the current measures in place will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

In November, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach made note of the Conservation private members motion, launching his three month push to gain support from the Northwest to support his message that the Moratorium should remain in place.

The oil tanker moratorium was passed by the House of Commons in June of 2019, though the difference between passage and defeat at that time was but three votes.

The Private Member's bill to repeal the moratorium from Edmonton Centre MP James Cumming was introduced on September 23rd, 2020, going down to defeat at second reading on February 3rd, 2021.

Mr. Bachrach celebrated the House of Commons vote with a short post through his Social media feeds on Wednesday afternoon.

Private member's bills for the most part rarely find the level of support required to make it past the second reading stage, which is the fate suffered by Mr. Cummings initiative this time around.
