Youth Soccer set to kick things up a notch in 2023, with plans for indoor space coming to fruition

2023 is shaping up to be a big year for youth soccer in Prince Rupert, with the Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association looking to move into a new indoor space by the fall, something that will allow the sport to continue to offer options year round for players.

A hint towards the plans was posted to the PRYSA Social media stream on Thursday, noting of the space in the Canfisco Warehouse that the Association has been looking at.

Something that would make them neighbours to the Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association which moved into the east side warehouse in December of 2021.

Charles Cook President of the PRYSA noted for the North Coast Review,  that  once the details are finalized with the city on the lease, the project at the Canfisco Space would require some renovation work towards the soccer associations plans.

The timeline ahead would be a two to four month construction period and which would give the PRYSA opportunity to offer their first eight week Futsal league in September 2023.

Mr.  Cook noted that they plan to operate three eight week Futsal sessions a year to complement the eight week outdoor season.

The Canfisco Warehouse space, which the City has been leasing out to
businesses and community organizations may soon see one new tenant.
With the PRYSA indicating that they are close to an agreement to lease
space at the facility adjacent to Rushbrook Floats

With the prospect of an indoor space now close to reality, the combined schedule for indoor and outdoor play, will mean that an additional 24 weeks of organized youth soccer will be available for those who play the sport in Prince Rupert.

We made note of the PRYSA plans back in November, for what the Association has have baptized Project Ts'mtsaaw, the pace of the planning now moving forward at a quicker pace as the finish up dotting the I's and crossing the T's with the City of Prince Rupert.

While those plans continue to percolate,  The PRYSA Futsal nights at Conrad will resume in the last week of February, and run for another six weeks to the end of March.

At that point the Spring and Summer outdoor season will be ready to launch, keep an eye on the PRYSA Social media pages for more news on the plans for the indoor facility, as well as the heads up for the registration period ahead for the Outdoor season in Prince Rupert.

Update: See comment section below, for a look at how PRYSA plans to address any of the required work at the facility upon signing on to the space.

  1. Project Ts'mtsaaw funding to date has been provided entirely by reserve funds, grants, and donations from local businesses and individuals.
Any site specific renovation costs will be covered by those funds.
