High Ground Selfies in Prince Rupert could win you a fully stocked Emergency Kit

This week is Tsunami Preparedness Week, seven days dedicated towards preparation and awareness of Tsunami threats along the British Columbia Coast.

The heads up, as we noted last week, came from the Province with some helpful tips on how to prepare for  the result of any extreme seismic activity, and this week the City of Prince Rupert is participating with a chance for you to win a fully stocked Emergency Kit if you take a photo of your own High Ground spot.

"We’re teaming up again this year with support from PreparedBC to get the word out about tsunami risk and response in Prince Rupert. Even though Prince Rupert is a community set back at elevation away from the waterfont, it’s still really important for the public to know how to respond in case of a tsunami alert or warning. The most important thing is for residents to stay away from the waterfront and also from the hospital so they don’t impede emergency traffic during a tsunami alert.”  -- Jeff Beckwith, Prince Rupert Fire Chief.

In their information release of yesterday, the City notes that there are really few areas of any potential danger in the city limits, with just the waterfront areas and residential area of Beach Place and Water Street at any potential risk.

Still, making your way to high ground from waterfront locations is worth a practice, with the City identifying a few Marshalling areas as Tsunami Safe locations, those include:

The corner of Dry Dock Road and 6th Avenue East
The corner of Bill Murray Drive and Stiles Place
The Rec Complex (our emergency muster station)
Your house! (So long as you don’t live on Beach Place or Water Street– this counts as high ground. We’re making it easy for you.)

Once at one of those locations al you have to do is take a selfie at high ground (from the City's tsunami-safe locations).

As the Fire Chief observed above, the area surrounding the Hospital, while at the highest ground in the city, is an area to avoid so as to ensure access to the city's health care facility.

From there submit it to Facebook or Twitter, be sure to tag @CityofPR and put the hashtag of #HighGroundSelfiePR

The High Ground Selfie competition takes place until April 15th
