60 years of Service for the residents of Prince Rupert gains Lions Club a Legislature shout out from MLA Rice

This is the 60th year celebration year for the Prince Rupert Lions Club in Prince Rupert and on Monday North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice shared some background on the long serving community organization with the members of the Legislature.

Speaking during the Members Statements portion of the afternoon session, Ms. Rice traced some of the history for the organization.  From the days of three Lions Clubs in the city and the strength of the volunteers that formed the groups  through the years.

As well,  she noted of the list some of the unique locations for their meeting places in the city during that history.

The MLA also highlighted  some of the work that the Lions have taken on during those sixty years in the community.

Annually the club raises approximately $60,000 from fundraising efforts. Almost all of the money raised by our local Lions Club goes to support local charities and organizations.

Typically, in a given year, they support the Salvation Army Food Bank; the Prince Rupert wildlife shelter; the Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery; the Trinity men's recovery house, a place where men can find support as they recover from addictions; the Prince Rupert Special Events Society, including supporting Halloween Fest, the children's festival and Seafest.

In addition, the club sponsors numerous youth activities, including the gymnastics club, Prince Rupert Youth Soccer, Prince Rupert club volleyball, Charles Hays basketball teams, First Nations basketball teams and many others.
