Lots Going on at former McCarthy GM properties on Portage Avenue

There's one more lot now awaiting a developer, with some recent land clearing
taking place at one of the former McCarthy GM properties in Prince Rupert

Land clearing and renovations are the theme for two properties that once housed the city's General Motors auto dealership. With both the main site and a smaller parcel of land across the road from it gaining some attention in recent weeks.

The land clearing taking place on the area that was once the sales offices for the dealership when it operated as Sherman GM, with the structure taken down and carted away in March. There has been no indication as of yet as to what, if anything is planned for that parcel of land.

Workers with Marcan Construction are working on the
City of Prince Rupert's renovations for the new Operations Department home

Across the street work continues on what will be the new home for the City of Prince Rupert Operations Department, the City having leased the property from McCarthy GM in Terrace, with an option to purchase.

Supplies have been arriving on site towards that work, with contractors from Marcon Construction taking to their duties to begin the work to transform the auto dealership in the offices and shops for the City's Operations team.

The last update from City staff towards the project came in early January, where it appeared that the city was edging towards making a purchase of the property. A topic which generated a few questions at the time.

The subject has not returned to Council since for any further discussion.

  3. NCCS are actually going to be at the old Anglican Church location. There must be an error in the article.

    1. Hmmm, now it's a mystery! The Social Media post noted above does say the Portage Ave address which matches up with the lot ... looking forward to hearing more on the NCCS plans to clarify this one! NCR

    2. The city should clarify this also. Is this more commercial leasing?
Or a grant in kind. If so when was the grant approved.
      If commercial leasing, public notification?

    3. You have it wrong. The city rents it then tells the city about it. This way others don't get a chance to pay more rent.
