New RCMP detachment work continues forward as structure footprint takes shape

The Scope of the new RCMP detachment is starting to take shape
at the corner of McBride and Third Avenue East

Contractor Work Crews were hard at it on Monday as the construction of the city's new RCMP detachment began to show some significant process.

Following land clearing and preparation work over the fall and winter, the first of the more visible activity came in recent days, from work along the Court House side of the new detachment location on Third Avenue East.

The Excavation work was in full swing in January of this year, as the site prep work was finalized in anticipation of the stage of development currently underway.

The project made for some of the focus from the recent City of Prince Rupert budget process, with it being noted of the Long Term Debt taken on towards the build, which is estimated to be at a cost of 26 million dollars.

The project was last mentioned at City Council as part of their review of the 2023-26 Strategic Plan,  though that was more of an overview rather than any kind of timeline presentation.

Some of the past  notes on the project can be reviewed through our archives page.

  1. Here are the current MFA lending rates - https://mfa.bc.ca/long-term-lending-rates

Current long term lending rate is listed at 4.09%
To bad City Hall didn't lock in the RCMP loan in Fall 2020, when the lending rate was 0.91%.
While Legacy dividends service this debt, has our finance department ever attempted to refinance with the MFA in order to reduce the burden of servicing this debt?
Great question for someone to ask at the budget forum.
