Port Edward Council election forum set for tomorrow night at 7PM

Residents of the District of Port Edward will have their opportunity to measure up the candidates for both the Mayoralty and District Council tomorrow, as the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce and  Prince Rupert Toastmasters once again combine forces to host an All Candidates Forum at the Port Edward Community Centre on Tuesday night.

The evening of political discussion in the District will see the doors to the Centre open at 7PM, with the forum to start at 7:30 PM.

Two challengers for the Mayoralty; Knut Bjorndal and Doug Larsen will offer up the alternative plans that they have in mind for the community in the years ahead.

While incumbent Mayor Dave MacDonald will have opportunity to defend the Council record of the last four years and outline what plans the Council may wish to explore for the next four.

Five council candidates are seeking the four Council seats available with the District, included on the panel for the night's discussion will be incumbents James Brown, Dan Franzen, Christine Mackenzie and Grant Moore, challenger Murray Kristoff rounds out the five participants for Tuesday's debate.

The evening could explore how the District will move forward without the prospect of the Pacific NorthWest LNG development and the financial opportunities that it had offered the community and what new initiatives that the District has been working on following the cancellation of the mega project for the North Coast.

As well, the evening  may offer up an answer to some of the commentary from the Prince Rupert campaign with Councillor Niesh and Mayor Brain noting that the District is receiving too much from the Ridley Island Tax Agreement, as well as how the District should become more involved in funding a shared services agreement with Prince Rupert.

Tuesday's Port Edward forum is sponsored by the Northern British Columbia Real Estate Board and CFNR radio.
