The Haida Gwaii Observer has called attention to a bit of a transportation crunch for those looking to access Haida Gwaii in the next few weeks.
According to the Island newspaper, BC Ferry reservations on the Northern Adventure are not available until mid May, with those looking to make the journey in early May without having previously booked their space now looking at a growing list of standby travellers.
According the Observer, BC Ferries has advised that the travel crunch is partially related to paving projects on the Islands and the transit of those vehicles to the Islands in the early part of May.
The reservation situation is just the latest of concerns to be expressed regarding transportation between the Islands and Prince Rupert. Considering the importance of the Ferry service for day to day travel of island residents, it would seem that industrial requirements such as the paving project might be something that perhaps should better have been allocated to a barge service.
Removing what appears to have been a major inconvenience that has taken away valuable space on the Ferry system from those that need to travel between Haida Gwaii and the mainland.
