Wednesday's COVID-19 review saw a jump in both new cases over the last 24 hours as well as an increase in the number of those who have passed away from the virus, those among the notes from British Columbia Health Minister Adrian Dix and Public Health Officer Doctor Bonnie Henry.
“We are announcing 45 new cases, for a total of 1,336 cases in British Columbia."
The review of each of the five Health Authorities notes that 615 cases are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 487 are in the Fraser Health region, 81 in the Island Health region, 130 in the Interior Health region and 23 are in the Northern Health region, the latter the same as it was on Tuesday.
Dr. Henry and Mr, Dix also noted that more British Columbians have passed away from the virus over the last 24 hours.
"We are saddened to report a further five COVID-19 related deaths in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health regions for a total of 48 deaths in British Columbia. We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones."
The news from long term care facilities made for a mix of items, where more residents of the those facilities remain as the highest risk group from the virus, with the increase in deaths found in many cases from those facilities. Though there has been some positive news from there as well in the way of stabilizing the situation in those residences.
“There have been no new long-term care facility outbreaks in the last day. Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health teams continue to provide support to the affected long-term care and assisted-living facilities, which have a combined 226 cases of COVID-19.
To date, 838 people who had tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered and no longer require isolation.
Of the total COVID-19 cases, 135 individuals are hospitalized and 61 of those are in intensive care.
The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation."
They both made note of an announcement earlier in the afternoon from Premier John Horgan announcing new measures for those arriving residents of the province from their travels out of country, withe the returnees now having to file a return plan with government officials.
With the Holiday weekend getting closer, both officials also stressed the need to remain close to home the next few days, with self isolation a key towards bending the curve.
"This is not the time to take unnecessary travel, it's not the time to go to some of our smaller, or more remote communities where the services may not be available to support you or to support the community, should this virus be introduced into those communities.
And we need to make sure that we consider the impact that such a mis-step could have on everything that we have done, and everything that we have put together in the last couple of weeks and to make sure that we continue to keep our firewall strong"
