Blog Watching: Week ending November 13, 2022

The prospect of a significant change for the corner of Third West and McBride caught the eye of a large volume of readers this week, with our Thursday notes on the fate of the old DQ building gaining the largest number of views on the week.

Another area which found a significant amount of review from readers was directed towards our notes on what was a busy week of industrial traffic rolling through the downtown area. That following the temporary closure for the Direct private route between DP World and Ridley Island.

Themes of Municipal Politics  made for the final three items of our five most read pieces for the week.  The first was our look at the two surprise announcements of last week by outgoing Mayor Lee Brain towards plans for housing in Seal Cove and Hydrogen development for Watson Island,. The focus for our Monday story was on how it will be up to the New Council led by Newly installed Mayor Herb Pond and his Council to bring residents up to date on the twin programs.

This was the week that the new Council took office and our review of the Monday evening oath ceremony gained a large readership, as did our  notes on the late Thursday announcement from the City that outlined how the city's work on Watson Island  remediation was up for a Brownfield award.

From the weeks review however, the top item noted of some demolition work set to start on Monday morning that will make for a very different look for the entrance to the downtown core.

Demolition set for old Dairy Queen structure starting Monday, November 14  -- It's been the subject of much speculation for over a decade now, and on Monday morning the start of the next chapter for the property on the corner of McBride and Third West will take its first septs. With Northern Savings announcing the start of the demolition process for the structure known mostly in recent times for its use as a location for the former Dairy Queen.  (posted  November 10, 2022)

That article was followed by:

Monday has seen the return of a large volume of container traffic through the downtown core --  Much of the last week saw a return to some downtown traffic congestion, as trucks transiting to and from the DP World Container Facility returned to city streets.  As we outlined on Tuesday,  that was owing to a closure of the dedicated roadway between DP World and Ridley Island,  The temporary return to city streets had come to an end by Thursday morning, with the reopening of the roadway in and out of DP World.    (posted November  7, 2022)

Up to the New Council to fill in the details on the Seal Cove Residential, Watson Island entry plans -  A pair of new initiatives greeted the arrival of the new Prince Rupert city Council this week. With the departing Mayor making note of a property sale towards new housing at Seal Cove and a ambitious development proposal for Hydrogen energy Watson Island. Two items that newly installed  Mayor Herb Pond and his Council membership will need to provide some background for residents at some point in these early days of their endeavours.   (posted November  7, 2022) .

Tribute for departing Council members, thanks from returning or newly elected ones as Prince Rupert City Council installed in office -- Monday's debut for the newly elected City Council made for much in the way of ceremony and few items on the Agenda, as the council elected on October 15th took their place in City Hall Chambers. The night one for oath taking and short comments from the elected officials. (posted November 8 , 2022)

City of Prince Rupert up for National award related to work on Watson Island redevelopment  -- City officials will be awaiting word from Toronto on Monday evening and the Gala for a National Awards program. That following the nomination of the City's remediation work on Watson Island for a "Brownie" Award, the Prince Rupert project is up against two others from Ontario in the Reprogram category.  (posted November, 10 2022) .
