Smithers based Central Mountain Air gains new CEO

Smithers based Central Mountain Air has announced the arrival of a new CEO, with Bob Cummings named to the post this week.

The former Executive Vice President with West Jet from 2006 to 2018 takes on his duties as the airline continues to grow and serve a number of communities in British Columbia and Alberta.

"CMA has a proud history of scheduled service and has built a substantive charter business. I am excited by the potential of CMA to further connect Canadian communities to the world, whether through scheduled service, charters, and/or provisioning cargo. With a fragmented under 50-seat Canadian regional airline market, there are many opportunities before us. My first-priority will be to meet all the CMA employees to listen and talk about our exciting future." -- New Central Mountain Air CEO Bob Cummings on the future for the Smithers based airline

Douglas McCrea will continue to serve as the President of CMA, having held the post for over 18 years at the airline which offers both scheduled passenger service as well as cargo service in Western Canada.

CMA serves both Smithers and Terrace in the Northwest, as well as through flights to Prince George and points in the North East.

Those on the Board of the Prince Rupert Airport Authority might want to send the new CEO a card of congratulations and an invitation to come a little further west to the North Coast where he could explore options for flights out of the Digby Island airport, offering perhaps some competition to the local aviation market.

WestJet also had some news for the aviation industry today, launching a new summer schedule with a number of new destinations or increased flight operations planned.

Included in the roll out was a new service for Dawson Creek, which will be the 72nd destination that WestJet will serve out of its Calgary hub.

So far, the Calgary based airline has not indicated any interest in serving the Prince Rupert market at this time.
