Prince Rupert RCMP and local youth look to willow weaving to build relationships

The Prince Rupert detachment doubles as an art gallery
this month, as the final results of a local youth initiative
are on display following a two month weaving workshop

Members of the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP and a number of local youth spent much of the last two months working with willow, taking part in a Willow Weaving workshop that offered an opportunity to learn new skills and build positive relationships.

The two month long program was hosted by Northwest artist Anneh Kessels and saw the participation of youths from the ages of 13 to 16 taking part in the sessions with the local Mounties.

As part of their work the group weaved natural materials to create baskets and other decorative items.

The space for the workshop was provided by the Prince Rupert Rowing and Yacht Club, while the Prince Rupert Aboriginal Community Services Society lent their support to the initiative as well.

Some of the artwork is currently on display at the Sixth Avenue West detachment.
