Thoughts on consumer packaging ban gains Terrace resident the win in MP Nathan Cullen's Create Your Canada contest

Ben Korving from Terrace will be off to Ottawa in early 2019, after his submission to a contest hosted by MP Nathan Cullen proved to be the top idea submitted to the Create Your Canada competition from this years participants.

The panel of judges were swayed by Korving's argument for a bill that would ban all consumer packaging products that are not either recyclable or compostable.

From the success of the submission, the Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP will be flying Mr. Korving to Ottawa early next year where he will watch how his idea is turned into a bill and then tabled for discussion in the House of Commons.

The MP noted how the issue is a timely one and how it's through leadership from residents of the Northwest and across Canada that small ideas can become larger forces for change.

“Plastics and non-compostable production are increasing at an alarming rate and the federal government needs to wake up, ... We need big changes to our laws and the leadership from citizens like Ben will help us deal with this urgent problem. I look forward to meeting Mr. Korving in Ottawa and presenting his bill before my colleagues.”

The 2018 initiative was launched in May of this year, with Mr. Cullen hosting a number of information sessions across the riding to stoke some of the interest in the project.

In a Facebook post, the Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP noted that over 100 different submissions were received in the competition, with the panel of judges made up of a number of community leaders from across Northwest BC.
