One million containers have passed through the DP World facility on Prince Rupert's waterfront making for a significant moment in the history for the Port |
DP World's Fairview Terminal is celebrating a milestone today, with the COSCO Africa receiving a forty foot container this morning that marked the one millionth TEU of the year to be handled by the container terminal on the Prince Rupert waterfront.
The Port of Prince Rupert relayed the history making moment in a media release today that noted that it was a load of lumber delivered to Prince Rupert from CN Rail's Prince George Transload facility, the lumber a product of Canfor's Plateau mill.
The notation of the source of the one millionth TEU highlights the growing footprint that the Port of Prince Rupert services and how shipments out of the DP World facility are shaping the economy of British Columbia and Canada.
That was the theme that Port of Prince Rupert President and CEO Shaun Stevenson was stressing in today's statement on the milestone moment.
“Reaching one million TEUs in a calendar year is a significant milestone for the Port of Prince Rupert which demonstrates the success we and our partners have had in building a strategic gateway for trans-Pacific trade, making Prince Rupert one of the fastest growing gateways in North America,
Reaching this milestone would not have been possible without the investment in expanding terminal capacity from DP World, and the strong partnerships with CN and the local ILWU in working together to continue to grow capacity while maintaining the speed and fluidity our shippers have come to expect.”

DP World's operations in Prince Rupert feature four weekly services from three maritime alliances, with Fairview now one of Canada's most recognized ports for imports and exports to North America.
An achievement that DP officials note comes through the many partnerships that have been forged to develop the North Coast gateway.
“DP World is proud to have achieved the million TEU milestone,” “We congratulate and thank the men and women whose hard work and dedication made this achievement possible. This accomplishment is also a testament to the strong collaboration and support amongst the supply chain and community partners.
We are pleased to share this historic milestone together with our partners, First Nations, ILWU, City of Prince Rupert, Prince Rupert Port Authority and CN Rail. DP World Prince Rupert is a vital link in enabling Canadian trade and this achievement reflects the potential of the port and is a sign of many more to come.” -- Maksim Mihic, General Manager DP World (Canada) Inc.
Reaching the milestone at just past the midway point of December would indicate that the Year End Numbers for DP World and the Port of Prince Rupert will provide for a promising indication for what's ahead in 2019.
With a current capacity of 1.35 million TEU's per year, the next expansion of the terminal is set to start in 2019 and will see the shipment levels increase even further, with Fairview set to have the potential for 1.8 million TEU shipments in place by 2022.
