Digby Tower lights are on! But nobody is home ... yet

The Digby Tower lit up against the early morning sky today

The visual is an impressive one for those travelling across the Bridge at McClymont Park, with the newly renovated Digby Tower lit up brightly on the night sky, the apartments that make for the towering presence on the east side still vacant, yet to be put into service to help with the housing crunch in the community.

The east side residential tower was purchased by a Victoria property developer in 2020 for 1.5 million dollars, with an extensive renovation program then taken on to basically reinvent the building from the ground up at the location for the city's second tallest structure.

The property was an item on the Agenda for City Council in July of this year, as part of a land sale request (approved in August) towards parking for the residential building, though at the time there was no indication as to when it's expected to open.

The project has been ongoing since February of 2021, and the reconstruction for the property has certainly delivered a showcase of a building from the outside.

The construction work was also of note as part of the recent State of the City presentation by now former Mayor Lee Brain in July, who noted at the time that the work on the 60 units was almost complete.

The former Mayor had previously suggested lat year that the project was to be completed in 2021, so it's clearly a tad behind schedule at the moment.

As we get closer to the end of 2022, there has yet to be any advertisements delivered towards an opening date for the building.

Also unknown so far, are any details when it comes to potential rentals or sales of units for the property and what may be the asking rate, once the building is ready to accept residents.

When the owner does put out the call to check out the new digs, it will be one of the most anticipated openings of residential space in recent years.

We last made note of the work in March, our item which is available here, also includes an archive of some of our previous notes on the work since the purchase of the building.

More notes on housing themes in Prince Rupert can be explored through our archive here.

  1. How much does one want to bet there are plans already for the units? It’s the most unusual situation that there has been no rental/purchase information put forth to the public.
