Not only is it back to school time for students of Coast Mountain College, but September is election season at the college with voting on Council positions set for October 1 |
While many in the Northwest may have their focus on the Municipal election campaigns this fall, those attending Coast Mountain College campuses across the region have some politics of their own to consider, with the call for nominations for membership on the colleges Education and First Nations Council memberships.
The notice of Election for the Education Council was issued this week, with the 11 day nomination period coming to a close on September 14th at 4PM.
Once the nominations close, Qualified nominees will be notified by the Registrar prior to the campaign period of September 19 to 26, if there is only one candidate per seat available, the nominated candidate will be declared elected.
The Nomination process for the Council is as follows:
Only those enrolled as a student (in good standing) currently attending the College are eligible to participate. If you are uncertain of your enrolment status, please check with your Registration Office.
Candidates must be nominated by five other recognized members of the student body enrolled as students attending NWCC. Each nominee must declare that s/he has every reason to believe that s/he will be able to fulfill the term of office. Student members receive $100 for every meeting attended.

Election Day at Coast Mountain College is set for October 1st from 9AM to 4PM, with poling stations set up in Registration office at the Terrace Campus and in the Library of the Prince Rupert campus on Fifth Street. For other Coast Mountain campus locations, voting will take place at the Registration Desks.
The first meeting for those who are successful in the October 1st vote will take place on October 19th.

The Education council serves as the advisory body to the College Board on major institution wide issues and educational policy, it consists of four seats for student representation, two from Terrace, one from Prince Rupert and one student from any other campus.
Student members receive 100 dollars for every meeting which they attend.

At the same time, the First Nation Council election will also take place with similar time lines for the nomination process and election date.
The focus of the First Nations Council is to develop policy recommendations based upon educational issues and strategies of First Nations Communities and to increase student success in the Coast Mountain Region.
The eligibility criteria for participation in the process is as follows:
