The Alaska Marine Highway System is currently in the midst of celebrations saluting their 50 years of service to Alaska (and British Columbia for that matter) with events planned up and down the Alaskan coast.
Ketchikan will be celebration central on May 1st, as the AMHS hosts a community celebration at Berth Number 3 in the downtown district of the city.
The MV Malaspina will be the host vessel for the Anniversary event, with residents and visitors coming aboard from 2 to 6 PM to take in the celebrations.
The theme of the day will be salmon and features music from the Ratfish Wranglers, tours of the vessel and a chance to view a documentary on the Alaska Marine Highway at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Centre at 7:30 that evening.
For Rupertites looking for a little adventure and short jaunt up the coast, the Anniversary Celebration offers up a chance to learn more about the Ferry Service that connects BC with Alaska, as well as to learn more about our neighbours to the north.
