Blog Watching: Week ending November 8, 2020

It was a week for elections, an American one which went down to the wire, the opening of mail in ballots for British Columbia's recent provincial election and on Wednesday, the election of a new government for the Nisga'a Nation.

Executive positions, a range of community positions throughout the Nass and the local urban representative positions in Prince Rupert/Port Edward were all on the ballot, the results were released on Friday night.

Also finding a good readership this week, our notes on the police watchdog's office being called to review a case from mid October in the City, as well as our story on the report from the Canadian Transportation Safety Board related to the Kitwanga area rail derailment of early January.

The next step for a proposed bulk liquids storage and terminal facility on Ridley Island was announced this week, as well as word from the Province of British Columbia which began distribution of COVID-19 recovery money for municipal and regional governments.

The top item of the week however, explored this weeks election of a government for the Nisga'a Nation.

Election season continues for the Northwest; as Nisga'a Nation members head to the voting booth today --  The Nisga'a Nation hosted their 2020 election on Wednesday, set to elect to the position of President, as well as a range of other executive, village and Urban member positions including from Prince Rupert and Port Edward. On Friday night the Nisga'a Elections office released the results of the campaign period.   (posted  November 4, 2020)

Independent Investigations Office called to Prince Rupert to investigate a death related to an incident from mid October --  The watchdog office tasked with reviewing police related incidents that involve a death have been called to the city to review the circumstances in the wake of an October 18th incident.   (posted November 5, 2020)

Sudden track failure listed as cause of January 2020 CN Rail derailment near Kitwanga  -- The Canadian Transportation Safety Board has concluded its investigation into the derailment of 34 cars of a Prince Rupert bound train in January of this year   (posted November 4, 2020)

With Screening Decision in hand, VOPAK Terminals reaches next step of development with Virtual Open House planned in November and Environmental Assessment underway -- The next step towards development of a proposed bulk liquids terminal will see a Virtual Open House over two nights and a public comment period through this month for the VOPAK terminal at Ridley Island.  (posted November 5, 2020)

Province of British Columbia to deliver almost 2.8 million dollars to City of Prince Rupert for COVID-19 Safe restart program  --  Communities across the province are receiving funding from the Federal government through the province to assist in restarting their municipal governments. We outlined all of the totals for the communities of the Northwest and Haida Gwaii     (posted November 6, 2020)
