Spot some ocean debris, want to report an oil spill? There's an app for that!

The quest to clean up the world's oceans is making use of our love for our mobile phones to help track down drifting debris and lend a hand to the efforts to help reduce the environmental footprint that has been left in the ocean environment.

The T Buck Suzuki  Foundation is sharing word of the app program hosted through Ocean Smart, outlining how the mobile project can help to assist with ocean debris clean up, as well as to report spills or contamination to relevant authorities.

The mobile app is available for both iPhone and Android users.

While they do note of the need for more action on ocean debris, the T Buck Suzuki Society also does caution towards any do it yourself gear retrieval, noting through their Social media feed this week that some of that gear may actually be stationed in place for a reason.

You can review more of their themes on the marine environment and sustainability issues through their Social media feed here, or from their website.
