Blog Watching: Week ending February 10, 2019

Prince Rupert residents seem to be somewhat attached to their local photography supply store, at least judging by the interest in our look this week at the shift of Shutter Shack to its new Third Avenue East location, with our notes on the new ownership of Lonnie and Bruce Wishart by far the most popular read of the last seven days.

The rest of the list of five for  the week was a little more congested with our item of Friday on the latest population count for Prince Rupert and the rest of the Northwest gaining a strong audience, followed quite closely by our review of the January North Coast Regional District session.

The late January get together saw Regional District tackle a range of items, with our look at their plans to join in on a province wide letter writing campaign directed at fossil fuel energy companies and climate change costs collecting the most reads of the NCRD reviews of the week.

The Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP has once again turned to the public for help, as they continue their investigation into the disappearance of North Coast resident Binh Tran.

We also took a look at a few notes from the District of Port Edward, with their plans to bring residents together for a community garden of some interest.

However the top story of the week was found on on the city's rebounding Central business street, and the relaunch of Shutter Shack.

The Shutter Shack Shift -- One of Prince Rupert's long time retail institutions changed owners and locations in January, with Shutter Shack making the move to the Third Avenue Shopping District, adding one more storefront to the slowly but surely rebounding shopping area.   (posted February 6, 2019)

That article was followed by:

Population count for Prince Rupert edges upwards in latest BC Stats Review -- The city is still a fair distance from the halcyon  days of 18,000 plus residents, but the 2018 stats review from the province's statistics office finds a slight bump upwards for Prince Rupert, with 12,821 counted in last years review.    (posted February 8 , 2019)

North Coast Regional District signs on to fossil fuel industry accountability campaign -- The members of North Coast Regional District have joined a number of other communities and Regional District's in the province to sign on to a letter writing  campaign from the West Coast Environmental Law Group. With the Local Regional District preparing to write letters to a number of international energy companies seeking to hold them accountable for their cost of climate change costs. More notes on Regional District can be explored here.  (posted February 5, 2019)

Prince Rupert RCMP continue quest for answers in December disappearance of Binh Tran --  The RCMP have been working the case file on the disappearance of Prince Rupert resident Binh Tran for two months now, and with few results so far, they once again have turned to the public to jog their memory to see if they may have anything of importance to share on the file.  (posted  February 4, 2019)

Port Edward looks toward community garden planning --  The District of Port Edward is looking to the community to form a local group to steer the way forward towards a community garden project proposed for the old Port Edward School property.   (posted February 7, 2019)
