It was a little less than a year ago that we outlined how the PRPA and DP World were moving forward towards the feasibility for the second terminal, the location proposed for an area south of the existing container terminal just to the north of Ridley Island.

AECOM noted of their success towards the study for the proposed project with an announcement on January 12th, their introduction providing some additional background towards the plans for the facility and a larger footprint on Ridley Island as well.

Among their observations, once complete, the terminal will be a low impact, fully electric terminal that combines leading edge technologies with a unique intermodal operating model to facilitate an efficient and sustainable transportation network.

AECOM also made note of the plans towards a logistics park planned for Ridley Island, a facility considered an integral part of the expansion work for the container handling facility.
As AECOM explains it, DP World Prince Rupert will operate the planned Logistics Park on Ridley Island, that facility to work symbiotically with the DP World existing terminals; the Second Terminal is anticipated to double the Port of Prince Rupert’s overall container capacity, adding at least two million twenty-foot equivalent units annually.
AECOM will undertake a study of the project to determine the technical and financial feasibility of developing the terminal, together with the baseline studies that will be required for environmental approvals.
The existing terminal and the second terminal would be linked together by way of the Fairview-Ridley Connector road that went into service over the summer of 2022.
The Logistics Facility is one of two proposed for the immediate area, one led by the Prince Rupert Port Authority the other in partnership with the Metlakatla First Nation.
Both were among the elements from a PRPA review of supply chain plans back in February of last year.

Prince Rupert Port Authority President and CEO Shaun Stevenson also hailed the progress for the second terminal facility, noting how that expansion is a key element of the Port's vision for the future.
“The Second Terminal is core to the Port of Prince Rupert vision to grow capacity in support of Canada’s trade expansion ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region while also contributing to greater resiliency in Canada’s import and export supply chains.
In addition, a second terminal will enhance Canada’s trade competitiveness providing increased capacity and efficiency for shippers while contributing significant economic benefit for local communities and the broader northern BC region.
