Taking Stock: North Coast Business Scene -- October 2018

The arrival of fall has delivered much in the way of looking ahead whether short term, or long term for the region's business community, with forums for industry, engagement sessions on cannabis and planning for Galas all part of the month's agenda.

Celebrating success through Small Business week and making investments in the community during Credit Union week also served as some of the narrative for the month of October with the focus on some Prince Rupert based organizations as we worked our way through the month.

Another theme that continued to dominate the news, was the ongoing commercial drift to Cow Bay which was also on display this past month, with more of the city's business operators staking out some turf in what is morphing into the new commercial core for the community

Those themes and many others, can be be found as part of our review of the Commercial and economic scene in the region for the last month below:

October

Area business leaders met with industry and government officials in Terrace in late October taking part in the annual Nation2Nation Forum which this year put much of its focus on the development of the LNG industry in the Kitimat region.

Northern Savings Credit Union celebrated Credit Union Day in mid November, by welcoming customers to their branches for a number of events and making a range of donations that totalled nearly 17,000 dollars.

The Prince Rupert based financial services organization also made news in the real estate market, purchasing the old Dairy Queen building on McBride, a move hailed by local politicians and residents alike as a positive step towards redeveloping some of the city's downtown area.

New cannabis regulations went into effect across Canada this month, but there would be no rush to the stores in Prince Rupert just yet, with the City still working on its plan for commercial cannabis retail opportunities. The process will seek the engagement of the public on November 13th.

Prince Rupert City Council outlined it's cannabis plans during the course of the October 9th Council session, setting aside a swath of the downtown area as the potential area where cannabis retailers will be allowed to set up operations.

The success of Rupert Lawn and Garden has been recognized once again, this time through BC Government, which profiled the Seal Cove business as part of Small Business Week activities.

It's almost Gala Season for the Prince Rupert and District Chamber of Commerce, with this years theme of the Grand Ball introduced in October, the Chamber continued to finalize the plans for one of the city's major social events, with the Grand Ball set for the North Coast Convention Centre on November 17th.

Prince Rupert based CityWest continued on its work towards Remembrance Day, with the community channel making plans to produce a local program that will explore the stories of those in the Northwest who have served in the Armed Forces.

The Northwest Communication provider also introduced a new online presence in October with a significant remaking of the CityWest website launched for the region.

Prince Rupert's Ale drinkers were casting more than votes in the municipal election, another election that may be a little closer to their hearts for some was also underway, with Prince Rupert's Wheelhouse Brewing Company up for a Growlie Award, nominated in the Unsung hero category.

There was another shuffle along the Third Avenue business district in October, that as a pair of local businesses relocated to new storefronts, with Cow Bay once again the destination of choice for the city's commercial sector.
