The return to updates on the British Columbia COVID situation to start the week off included questions from the media today, as well as to offer some positive trends from the weekend, with the pace of new case reports declining to the mid 600's which is a welcome drop from the case counts of one week ago when the reports were above 1000 per day.
The positive trend however tempered by the reminder of the cost of COVID from Doctor Bonnie Henry and Minister Adrian Dix, that as they relayed word that fifteen more British Columbians having passed away from the virus over the last three days.
“Today, we are reporting on three periods: from April 30 to May 1, we had 835 new cases; from May 1 to May 2, we had 671 new cases and in the last 24 hours, we had a further 668 new cases.
This results in 2,174 new cases over the period, for a total of 131,656 cases in British Columbia.
There are 7,327 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, with 11,781 people under public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases. A further 122,518 people who tested positive have recovered.
Of the active cases, 474 individuals are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, 176 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.
There have been 15 new COVID-19 related deaths, for a total of 1,596 deaths in British Columbia. Our condolences are with the family, friends and caregivers of the people who have died as a result of COVID-19. “
Across the province the data review by Health Authority for the weekend was as follows: 438 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 1,509 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 61 in the Island Health region, 106 in the Interior Health region,
There were 60 new cases reported in the Northern Health region, that brings the Year to Date total of case reports across the Northern BC region to 7,223.
There were no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
Two health care facilities receive the all clear as well, with an update noting that outbreaks at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital and Abbotsford Regional Hospital are now over.
Towards the vaccination program, Doctor Henry noted today that 1,877,330 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 91,731 of which are second doses."
The two top public health officials also noted how the administration of vaccine deliveries is about to reach a quicker pace in the province.
“Once you are registered, your dose will be reserved for you, and you will be notified when to book.
We have reached a new, encouraging point in our pandemic response. Starting today, the available vaccine will be significantly increasing, and this is good news for all of us.
Over the coming month, more than one million vaccine doses will be delivered to our province, with more anticipated for June, giving the vast majority of eligible people access to a vaccine before Canada Day.
We are moving as quickly as possible to get vaccine into arms, which means at times, there will be bumps along the way in our rollout and delivery. Importantly, when those bumps occur, we will pivot and adjust to keep moving forward.
In the meantime, we must continue our actions to stop the spread and do everything we can to relieve the pressure on our health-care workers.”
