RCMP Response Tuesday brings man off Second Avenue Bridge for treatment in Hospital

The RCMP is providing a few details related to an incident on the city's west side on Tuesday, as members of the Prince Rupert detachment attended to a man in distress on the Second Avenue Bridge.

The daytime incident brought a large response from the detachment, with traffic stopped leading to the structure from the Graham side, as well as from the downtown part  of the city.

The Second Avenue Bridge was the scene of an RCMP response
on Tuesday, as members spoke with a man in distress on the structure

During the course of their time on the scene, Police responders spoke with the man in his early thirties for close to half an hour, before apprehending him under the Mental Health Act.

He was subsequently  taken to Prince Rupert Regional Hospital for further treatment and observation.

The level of distress calls has been noted in the past by the local detachment as an area of concern, when staff from the Prince Rupert detachment last made a prevention to City Council two years ago, it was noted that a growing number of calls of social issues and people in distress were making for part of a patrol officer's routine.

In late September, Prince Rupert City Councillor Nick Adey suggested to Council that an invitation be sent to the Detachment to provide an update for Council and the community, offering a chance to give residents a snapshot of policing issues in the region at this time.

So far, there has been no word from Council if they plan to move forward on the Councillors suggestion.
